Restaurants and cafés
For table service, a tip of around 10–15% is widely treated as standard, and more for excellent service. Before you add one, check the bill. Some restaurants, especially in tourist areas, add a service charge (look for "servicio" or "propina incluida"). If it's already there, you don't need to tip again unless you want to. When paying by card, the server may ask how much tip to add to the terminal ("¿cuánto de propina?") before running it. Some staff prefer a cash tip, which reaches them directly.
Bars
A small tip per drink, or around 10–15% of a tab, is common.
Hotels
- Bellhops / porters: a modest tip per bag is customary.
- Housekeeping: many guests leave a small amount per night, ideally daily, since staff can change from day to day.
- Concierge: tip for special help, like hard-to-get reservations.
Getting around
Taxi drivers aren't traditionally tipped for a simple ride, though rounding up or tipping for help with luggage is appreciated. For app rides, tipping in the app is optional. At gas stations, attendants pump the fuel. A small tip is customary, especially if they also clean the windshield or check the tyres.
Groceries, tours and other services
At many supermarkets, baggers at the checkout work for tips, so a few pesos is customary. Tour guides and drivers are commonly tipped at the end of a tour, more for a private or full-day tour. Spa and salon staff are usually tipped as a percentage, as in restaurants.
Tip in pesos
Tipping in pesos is generally more useful to the person receiving it, since exchanging small amounts of dollars costs them time and money (and coins can't be exchanged at all). Keep a supply of 20- and 50-peso notes and coins for tips. See the USD to MXN travel guide for cash and card tips.
Customs vary by region and venue. These are general guidelines, not rules. When in doubt, ask your hotel or a local.
